Each of these books contained details of all the convicts on several ships. Some clerks wrote vessels' names on paper and then glued it on - those who were confident of their penmanship just lettered it straight onto the binding.

From a negative found in a box marked 'IWW Dope'. The International Workers of the World, or 'Wobblies', carried out a program of direct action (which included sabotage and incendiarism) in Sydney in 1916, agitating for the release of their leader, Tom Barker. Barker had been jailed for sedition after making an anti-war speech in the Sydney Domain. 'Dope' refers to incendiary materials, such as cotton waste, turpentine, phosphorous and kerosene, allededly found during police raids on IWW headquarters in Sussex Street and in the rooms of various IWW members. Although the police evidence was considered slim, the 'IWW Twelve', were convicted of conspiracy and sedition, and all received long jail sentences. A royal commission in 1920 overturned the convictions. Detective Arthur Surridge, whose name can be read on the label here, led the police action. This series of photographs is among the earliest forensic object/exhibit photographs yet found in the NSW Police photograph archive.

These pictures are from Our Great Game - The Photographic History Of Australian Football by John Murray. I have simply scanned these out of the book, so I apologise for the quality and also contravening three kinds of copyright etc, but - how good are these photographs? I had never seen any of them before (although the last one I am told is well known).

You can buy the book here. You can buy some kind of new fangled e-book i-Pad version here. It is published by Slattery Media Group, and all I can say is buy it, it is tremendous.

I seem to be doing a series on NZ photographers now. I had not heard of Derek Henderson but I was just doing an image search for Ratana churches and lit on the first pic below. He has a great eye, and his website is well worth a visit. I am fascinated by rural NZ because it has so many similarities to rural Tasmania, but the underlying Maori culture, native flora and fauna are completely alien to me.
